It is one of the most important laws in the Universe – the more you give, the more you receive. Yet so many times, we hesitate to give, especially when we are feeling a sense of lack. If we feel that our resources are limited, we tend to hold tightly to what we have.

Hesitating or refusing to give will actually be counter-productive. Just as a seed cannot produce fruit until it is planted, you cannot receive until you give. Another way to look at it is this: You cannot receive more when your fist is clinched. You have to open your hand.

Have you ever wondered why money is referred to as “currency?” Or why your income is called cash “flow?” It’s because money needs to be in circulation – it needs to be given AND received – in order to fulfill its purpose. Money is actually no more than a representation of the energy that is generated when you give and receive.

Don’t let a lack of funds prevent you from giving. You can give a lot of things that are not money. You can give time. You can give a smile or a hug. You can give advice. You can give a prayer or a blessing. You can give information. You can give a physical thing. Many of those non-monetary ways in which you give can actually have a bigger impact than when giving money.

I often counsel new business owners that they need to be giving away more than they are receiving. Many people are afraid that they will be seen as “working for free” if they give some aspect of their business away. That’s the wrong attitude. Choose to give freely and the goodwill you create will come back to bless you in ways you cannot even imagine. Zig Ziglar, one of my favorite motivational speakers, is known for his saying “You can have everything in life you want if only you will help others get what they want.” In other words, giving help to others is the key to living the life of your dreams.

Make giving a conscious action every day. Before you meet with someone, think of ways you can give to them. If it’s a business meeting, maybe you can send them an email which contains a link to an article or blog post related to their business. If it’s a personal meeting, share a joke and give them a reason to laugh.

Try it today. The more aware you become of how are you giving, the more aware you will become of opportunities to give. It can change your life.
