A Hazy Shade of Summer

It’s nearly midnight as I am writing this. It’s dark, cold, and misting rain outside. Everyone else is asleep in the house, so it’s quiet. Well, mostly quiet. I can hear my cat snoring from the other room. She decided that her bed was going to be on our dining room table, the moment two years ago that I set down a fluffy blanket that I had just received as a Christmas gift.

I never did get to use that blanket for myself, but she loved it so much that I never missed it. Her happy snores always reinforce the fact that my choice was a noble one.

Anyway, I digress.

I almost feel like I am writing a letter to my future self. I guess I am, in a way. I don’t know what the world will look like when I read it, or when you do. I hope the world looks a lot different than it does tonight.

I think a lot about the quote in the beginning of my article. “Every storm runs out of rain.” It’s true. No matter how hard the wind blows or how big the storm is, the rain eventually stops. The skies clear and the sun shines. The sunbeams warm your face. The butterflies flutter across the breeze. The squirrels chase each other across the grass, racing each other up the trees.

It’s easy to focus on the difficulties in the world. The sorrows. And there are times where a day might get to be overwhelming for you. If so, it’s crucial to practice self care. Put down your phone, curl up with a book and some hot tea. Rest. Recharge.

The next day you start fresh, with your batteries recharged and your outlook sunny. Focus on your Joy. Look forward to what lies ahead. Frolic in the sun. Reach out to friends and family. Spread love. Share hope.
