In the past, I was concerned about my weight and what other people thought of how I looked. Now that I realigned my focus to my health, I needed to understand myself more, so I held several conversations with myself. Yes, I talked to myself and continue to do so. Who else am I going to talk to in order to understand me?
A doctor can tell me about what my body needs but I need those heart to hearts with myself to fully understand my needs. These are ongoing conversations. After all, I didn’t get to this shape overnight and I will not suddenly be as healthy as I can be overnight.
There are three areas covered in my ‘me conversations’; eating habits, activity level and how my clothes feel. I conquer my easiest topic first – my clothes. The first time I went through my closets and donated what I didn’t want. During the first conversation on this topic that was the best I could make myself do. Since then, I’ve gotten rid of those items that don’t fit. No more thinking, I’ll lose the weight and then I’ll wear it. No doubting thoughts of what if I gain it back then I’ll need it. I regularly take notice to how an outfit fits when I wear it. If it does not feel comfortable or I don’t like the look, it gets donated. For the time being, thrift shops are my favorite clothing source. I am lucky to have a sister who thrives at thrift shop gem finding. Eventually, I will rewardmyself with a true shopping spree.
Second topic is my activity level. During the time of COVID it was easy to decide what to do – take a walk or do a home workout video since group activities were non-existent. I did some home workout videos but even with modification I hurt myself a few times from the simplest moves. I enjoy walking and quickly came to the realization that was where I needed to start. Soon I was up to three miles four times a week. The last topic is my eating habits. I
decided to take advantage of the extra time gained from working at home and began cooking meals for myself. I found that it really wasn’t the counting of points, or calories that was my downfall – it was cooking. As a party of one, I had gotten away from this. I signed up for a home meal delivery service where everything for the meal comes in the package. I quickly fell in love with cooking again.
Even with a reignited love for cooking at first it was a struggle. Now I enjoy the entire process. I find two or three recipes for the week. From those extra ingredients, I put together meals for the remainder of the week. Occasionally, I’ll freeze a portion for an upcoming week.
