Over the past several years, I have begun to embrace the Danish or Norwegian idea of hygge. While it looks to be pronounced as hoo-gee it is actually the sound “hooga” which, to me, sounds like a big hug. And that is exactly how it feels. The concept of hygge is stepping aside from the daily rush to enjoy the simpler things in life with the people that you love. While the word as it is used today originated in the early 1800’s, it has garnered much attention in the last ten years. I believe that people are searching for something that feels much different than the hustle and bustle. It is certainly a lifestyle that I am embracing wholeheartedly now more than ever.
A recent reading called, Looking for Lovely, by Annie F. Downs has brought extra attention on looking at life through a lens of loveliness. On social media, you might even see this concept embraced as “romanticizing your life”. While I am not the classic version of a romantic woman (I type as I search for a Hallmark movie to watch), I can get on board with a lovely, romantic, and simpler life. You might be asking how you can add some of these ideas to your own life as we kick off 2024. Below are a few ideas:
- View yourself as the main character. Yes, I know that it is cheesy but just go with me for a second. The main character has a song, she has a huge role, and this movie of life is about her. You may be more accustomed to being the funny best friend or the doting supporting character. I totally understand! I played both for far too long. However, this is 2024 so bring that main character energy!
- Have you ever watched a Hallmark movie? Cute coffee shops, tiny bookstores complete with a sleeping cat in the bookstacks, snuggly blankets…this is the epitome of hygge. These basic errand activities are so romanticized in the movies. Anything could happen! And, if it does happen to be just another day, it is another day with coffee, a good book, and a cozy blanket. Sounds like a win to me!
- Social media may have you to believe that you aren’t living unless you are jet setting to destinations unknown with a designer bag on your arm and red bottom shoes. That may be considered “making it” for you. I love travel! But, if travel is more limited or non-existent for the time being, how can you make this time in your life an adventure? Glamorize those daily explorations. Be a tourist in your hometown. See it all through the lens of possibility just like a movie!
I dare you: to bloom where you are planted. Yes, I said it! The setting may not be ideal. You may really be overworked and underpaid. But the perspective is totally up to you. Find me on social media and please share your new-found, romanticized life by stepping in as the main character. It makes all of the difference!
