There’s a saying that if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. But sadly, for many of us, knowing what we really love to do isn’t so obvious.

Finding your passion takes some digging into who you really are. It takes being honest with yourself and sometimes facing hard truths. But when you finally discover what really lights you up, you will immediately feel happier, freer, and more alive.

Here are a series of questions to ask yourself to start the journey to discovering your passion. Get out a sheet of paper and get ready to write.

Question one: If money was not an obstacle, what activities would you do to fill your time? Would you spend your time gardening? Or would you work with children? Or would you teach? Or would you travel the world and experience different cultures? There is no right or wrong answer. Just write down all of the things you would want to do if there were no strings attached.

Question two: When you look back at your list, are there any items you feel you’re an expert at, or at least better than the average Jane, at doing? Circle them.

Question three: Of those items you circled, do you believe you would still love doing them if it was your full-time job? Would you be willing to work longer and harder to build your life around that activity? If you cannot answer yes, then these are just interests.

But if you can answer yes, then those activities actually are your passions. Once you identify your passions, it is your responsibility to find a way to incorporate them more into your daily activities. Your life, and the world, will be greatly enriched when you spend time doing what you are passionate about.

If you want to look even deeper into your passions, I highly recommend a book by Chris and Janet Attwood, The Passion Test. You can find it on Amazon or your local bookstore.
