In June of this year, I finished a 17-day cross country road trip. Two years ago, I would never have considered taking on the activities I was able to enjoy on this trip. Let’s look at what began years before, which are what I attribute to my ability to do the things accomplished on the trip.

Two years ago is a time that many want to forget, but that is not true for me. During the years leading up to the time of COVID, I spent hours and dollars trying to lose weight. Those are the years that I want to forget. I joined accountability groups for both my eating and exercise habits. I even reached out to one of my closest friends to be my daily accountability partner.

The results were not what I anticipated. My eating was restricted to counting points or calories. I became “The Queen of Modification” at the church “Insanity” exercise class. My closest friend’s response to my goal weight was “why not XXX” which was 20 pounds less then what I had originally put as my goal.

I was crushed! I felt that I was doing all the right things but saw no results. And obviously with my friend’s remark, others didn’t see any results either.

I kept walking into a wall of discouragement. What did I do when I hit the wall? Eat. Eat. And eat some more. Occasionally I would change it up and take a nap. Unfortunately, I followed this pattern for much longer than I would like to admit.

Next, along comes COVID and I was among many that got sent home to work. I realized that going to work was about the only activity I had throughout the day. I got an average of 6,000 steps a day in and around the building: including going up and down steps. I knew that I needed to make some changes to my health in order to survive my sentence of being home alone. That’s it! That was my aha moment.

I’m not sure why at that moment I thought about health instead of weight loss. Maybe it was the health DNA report I had received a few months earlier, in conjunction with the lab test results I had also received just a few days prior to my aha moment. It could have been the nurse’s annotation in my medical records. No matter what caused the eye-opening moment, I realized that I had been focusing on the wrong thing for many years.
