While there are many local places that cater to indoor activities for kids, sometimes staying home is what everyone needs. There is so much go go go in life that rainy days at home can be a big blessing! Blanket forts, board games, art projects, the options are nearly limitless!
While there are so many fun indoor activities but the ones we can do in the kitchen happen to be my favorite. We bake and decorate cookies, bake homemade bread, make cakes. Lots of foodie activities. One of our favorite activities is to make homemade play dough. We’ve been making this since my children were little. It’s one of those things that I didn’t panic over when they went to put it in their mouths, which is basically where most things end up.
This homemade play dough is super easy to make and even easier to make it what you want. You can make any color you want by using food safe dyes. My favorite kind of dyes to use are the gel icing colors. You can mix and match them to make any color your kids want.
I hope it adds to your happy summer memories!
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 cup salt
- 1 TBSP cream of tartar
- 1 cup water
- 1 TBSP cooking oil
Combine dry ingredients in a bowl, then combine wet ingredients in a pot on the stove and begin heating. Add dry mixture to pot and stir while heating on med-low. The dough is ready when it pulls away from the pot to form a ball and the wet parts are gone. Turn dough onto counter, knead a bit and let cool. Add color and Essential Oil to desired shade & smell and knead it into dough.
It’s important when making products for Littles that you are using pure, therapeutic grade Essential Oils. We caregivers know that often the play dough ends up in our Littles’ mouths…they get curious! This makes it more important to use pure essential oils, like Young Living brand, with no synthetics, additives, fillers or preservatives.
