Summer is here and the children are home from school and with us 24/7 for the next few months. If you are a family like us, you tend to look for creative and inexpensive ways to spend time with your family that don’t involve sitting in front of the television.

Yet, despite best efforts there will be those times over the summer when the children simply can not be entertained by us every second and we will ultimately hear the words, “I’m bored!”

In those situations this is what I have done for my children. I made an “I’m Bored” jar. A simple mason jar, mayonnaise jar or any container will suffice. Simply cut scraps of paper, use popsicle sticks, etc. and write out various activities that the child or children could do unaccompanied. Let them help you with the ideas and even decorate the jar with stickers and ribbon.

We had fun things in ours like “play a board game” and others like “mop the kitchen floor” so my children had to decide if they were bored enough to take the chance on whatever they pulled from the jar.

Below is a list of suggestions to get you started with your own list age appropriate for your children. I encourage you to give it a shot. Be creative. Have fun with it and enjoy a bored free summer!
