What are you passionate about? What really lights you up, gets your juices flowing, puts a smile on your face and won’t let you sleep at night? What are those things that you are automatically drawn to, that you will always choose over anything else and can’t imagine life without?

Did you know that many people cannot answer those questions? Oh, it’s not that they can’t. It’s that they just have never taken the time to really think about it. Many people think they are passionate about something, but if it were taken away, they would miss it for a hot minute and then move on to the next thing. You can live your entire life without truly being passionate about anything. But if you can find a couple passions and incorporate them into your daily life and business, your life can be deeply enriched.

Here’s a quick process to uncover your passions:

Set aside an hour or so. Sit in a quiet place with a notepad and pen. Take a couple deep breaths and relax. Then ask yourself: What do I really want? And start writing. Write everything that comes to mind. Don’t edit yourself, but write whatever you think.

Once you’ve exhausted all your thoughts and find yourself repeating items, take a break for a few minutes. Now the fun begins. It’s time to prioritize what you really want. What you do is look at item #1 and item #2 on your list and answer this question: “If I can only have one of these things in my life, which would it be?” Write your choice on a new list. Now compare item #2 and item #3 and answer the same question. “If I can only have one of these things in my life, which would it be?” Write your choice on the new list. And so on. Once you’ve gone through your initial list, go to your new list of “winners” and do the same process.

Once you’ve got your list whittled down to your top five “wants” you’ll be honing in on what is truly important to you. This is the basis for your passions. These are what you value. Finding your passions is only the first step. You need to incorporate as many activities that involve your passions as possible. These are the things you need to spend time pursuing, spend time thinking about and spend time enjoying. These are the things that feed your soul.
