Can we really choose to be happy?  For most, happiness is a temporary feeling based on external circumstances affecting us internally to the extent of outward expression. I say temporary because our external environment always changes. We can be riding in our cars singing along to our favorite song and feeling very happy in that moment until someone cuts us off in traffic and almost makes us wreck! Then, that state of happiness quickly turns into an afterthought leaving us angry and in disbelief.

It’s similar to a thermometer in that whatever the temperature is in the external environment is dictated by what the gauge of the thermometer is going to read. If it’s hot outside, the gauge will rise. Vice versa,  if it’s cold, then it will drop. This is what we can be like if we allow it. Our emotions will go up and down all day long according to what’s going on around us.

So, how can you choose happiness when unexpected things happen to us every day, all day? By choosing to forgive and let go. You see, the antonym of a thermometer is a thermostat. Instead of allowing the external temperature of the environment to dictate what the internal temperature will be, the thermostat is preset. No matter how the external environment changes, it adjusts itself so that the internal temperature remains the same.

Forgiveness is our internal thermostat, which allows us to adjust to life to keep that predetermined peace and happiness on the inside. When things happen to you in life, you can either allow it to disrupt and steal your happiness or you can choose to forgive, let it go and maintain that internal positive temperature.

So, to answer the original question, yes, we CAN choose to be happy. We can choose to live our lives like a thermometer or a thermostat. I choose to live as a thermostat to enjoy everyday serving God, my family and my community. What will you choose?
